In today’s episode, we’re going to be discussing Turmeric for depression.
Now, I’ve already done an older video on this topic but I wanted to do a quick update because there’s some things I didn’t cover in that video, which I feel you need to be aware of today.
So, first things first! This is Turmeric.
It looks very much like ginger but when you break it open, it has this beautiful rich orange colour – which I just love. But, you have to be careful when using turmeric, simply because it has a tendency to instantly dye everything it comes into contact with, including your skin and your nails.
Now, if you don’t have access to fresh turmeric root in your part of the world, don’t stress! Because, you can still receive all the natural antidepressant benefits that turmeric has to offer, simply by using the powdered version. Which is readily available in the spice section of most supermarkets.
Now, why is Turmeric so beneficial for depression?
Well, it’s because Turmeric contains a compound called Curcumin, which research shows is just as effective in treating depression as the SSRI drug Fluoxetine, which is more commonly known as: Prozac or Sarafem.
And, this is why Turmeric is said to be highly beneficial in the treatment for depression. Because,
- It’s natural. It comes straight from Mother Nature.
- It offers antidepressant benefits without all those usual nasty side effects. And,
- Turmeric doesn’t disrupt your natural brain processeswhich antidepressants are known to do.
Now, if you don’t know what I’m talking about here and you want to discover how antidepressants work on your brain, then be sure to watch the video: How Antidepressants Work by clicking here.
Now, many people ask me…
Is it best to add Turmeric to my diet or can I simply take the compound of Curcumin which is readily available in Supplement form, as a natural alternative for treating depression?
Well, the short answer is… It’s your choice.
But, I just want to highlight a few reasons why I believe adding turmeric to your diet is the better path to take, if you want long-term relief from depression, not to mention, an overall improvement in your health and well-being.
- Firstly, Turmeric is natural. Mother Nature has created it. So, in my eyes, it’s always going to be more beneficial to our entire body-mind system than a man-made creation like a supplement.
- Two, Turmeric is one whole unit. Whereas, curcumin supplements are just one tiny portion extracted from that whole. Curcumin is just one tiny piece of the pie.
Now, some would say; “well, I don’t need the whole because it’s the single compound of Curcumin which has been proven to be highly effective in treating depression.” And, yes! Curcumin is shown to be:
- An effective natural antidepressant
- Anti-inflammatory
- Antioxidant
- Anti-ageing
- It can boost your immune system
- It can help fight various forms of cancer
- It can reduce your risk of heart disease
- It’s shown to reverse the development of depression
But, what the majority of people are missing, is that Turmeric (in it’s natural form) contains Curcumin and some highly beneficial essential oils.
And, it’s these essential oils which boost the powerful effects of the Curcumin.
They work together as a team to make you healthier.
In fact, the latest research shows that curcumin along with the essential oils found in Turmeric give a far superior outcome to curcumin alone.
So, this is why I highly recommend using Turmeric in it’s natural form if you want to reap all the benefits this wonderful spice has to offer you.
