Now, without getting overly technical…
Your Autonomic Nervous System is basically the ‘control system’ for your whole body-mind system.
It’s your Autonomic Nervous System which maintains internal balance and your mental, emotional and physical health and wellbeing.
And, it’s the key to overcoming depression and creating a truly ‘depression-free’ life.
Our Autonomic Nervous System helps us maintain internal balance, health and a calmness of body, mind and emotions by a constant movement between it’s two branches; between the Sympathetic Nervous System and the Parasympathetic Nervous System.
Or, what I like to call your Survival System and your Thriving System.
It’s your Survival System which is associated with the ‘fight/flight response’. That’s when ‘survival-based’ chemicals flood your system, giving you the speed and strength to either fight for your survival or run for your life.
On the other hand…
Your Thriving System does what it says on the tin! It allows you to thrive by rejuvenating your system, healing your body-mind system and allowing you to flourish.
It is your Thriving System which floods your system with ‘health-enhancing’, ‘healing-based’ chemicals and molecules.
And, it’s this movement back and forth between your Survival System and Thriving System which holds the key to overcoming depression and creating a truly depression-free life.
Scientists have discovered, we require this constant movement back and forth between our Survival System (Sympathetic Nervous System) and our Thriving System (Parasympathetic Nervous System) to ensure we remain strong, healthy, resilient, internally balanced and depression-free.
This makes sense because if you need to sprint away from a tiger, your Survival System needs to be activated to give you the strength and endurance to save your butt from being the tigers next meal.
And when you are safe, you need your Thriving System to flood your system with ‘health-enhancing’ chemicals.
After such a stressful, traumatic or life-threatening event it’s these ‘health-enhancing’ chemicals which replenish, restore and heal your entire body-mind system.
So, this movement back and forth between your Survival and Thriving System is vital to ensure you remain internally balanced and in a state of overall physical, mental and emotional well-being.
But, here’s the deal….
When we’re struggling in depression it’s a ‘sign’ that we’ve lost this balance.
In depression we are no longer moving back and forth between our Survival System (Sympathetic Nervous System) and our Thriving System (Parasympathetic Nervous System), so easily.
We tend to remain predominantly within our Survival System.
This means, we are depleting our internal chemistry every time we face challenges in life but we are not naturally replenishing our internal body-mind system via the activation of our Thriving System.
That’s why we always feel like we are ‘running on empty’ in depression. It is a fact!

Look at some of the common side-effects or symptoms we can experience when our Survival System has been activated for an unnatural length of time and decide for yourself.

Our Survival System can get activated…
- When we experience a stressful or challenging event.
- When we experience a loss/gain that we perceive is going to affect our security, our happiness, our hopes and dreams or overall well-being. For example;
- A change in our circumstances
- Job loss / career change
- Relationship change / marriage / breakup / divorce
- Death of friend / family / pet
- Changes in role (becoming a parent, retiring, separated from children, etc.)
- Accidents / Illness / Injury

- Unexpected gains or losses
- Challenging situations
- Life changes (marriage, pregnancy, job loss, career change, etc.)
- Relocating / Change of environment
- Mental / emotional / physical trauma
- Change in family structure (new baby, parents divorce, children move, etc.)
Now, don’t think this only relates to so-called “negative events”. As you’ll see from the list above positive events such as; a lottery win, a new baby or even marriage may also trigger our Survival System.
This is due to us moving out of our comfort zone into brand new unknown territory.
Now, here’s the deal…
The moment your Survival System is activated or triggered, your entire system “primes you” for battle. A fight or flight response is triggered within your internal chemistry and this chemical process causes you to function in a very ‘limited-state’.
As a result, various processes are quite literally shutdown. Such as;
- Higher-level thinking
- Digestive processes
- Rational brain
- Reproductive system
- Sexual desire
None of these processes are needed for your absolute survival.
And, as a result of this “limited-state of functioning” we can experience all the classic symptoms commonly lumped together and slapped with the label; Depression.
- Depression is not some ‘black dog’ that comes out of nowhere.
- It’s not a mental illness.
- Depression is not a sign of weakness.
- It’s not a sign you are ‘losing the plot’ (even though, it can feel like that sometimes).
Depression is quite literally “a giant red flag” screaming; “There’s an internal imbalance within your Autonomic Nervous System”.

Our entire system is in combat mode; priming us to either run or fight. That’s it’s only priority right now!
Our rational, smart, logical brain is “turned off”.
This is because our system is pulling blood from all of our higher-level brain functions and sending it directly to our arms and legs to fight or to run.
Our system also heightens the emotional region of our brain; the part which can sense danger.
This is a major reason why we can become overly emotional, defensive or aggressive in depression. Our chemistry is literally “priming” us to be that way.

Until you “switch off” or de-activate your Survival System and it’s associated chemical processes (“priming you” for battle), you’re going to struggle to free yourself from depression or create a depression-free life.
Imagine your Autonomic Nervous System is like a flower…
- One side, your Survival System is like a closed flower. It’s attempting to protect and shield you from harm.
- On the other side, your Thriving System is like a blossoming flower. It’s less concerned about protection because it’s focussed on opening you up to experience the abundance and warmth of life.
As strange as it sounds, it’s within this “opening up” that allows us to be protected from depression.
Truth is, this is exactly how we all walk through life.
- There are moments, we close down and go into “protective mode” to save ourselves from mental, emotional or physical harm. This is when we enter our Survival System.
- Then there are times, we “open ourselves up” to life, allows others in and experience all the richness life has to offer. This is when we are in our Thriving System.
We are all constantly moving back and forth between these two systems.
Right this very minute each and every one of us is either:

Flooding our system with chemicals that are “priming us” for battle, deteriorating our health and “dumbing us down”. Our higher-level brain functions and all those ‘luxury’ systems are being “switched off”.
