Have you ever heard the phrase: “Change your thoughts and you’ll change your life?”   Is there really any substance or truth behind these words? Or, is it just new-age, fluffy hype? 

I mean, can we really just change our thoughts and our life miraculously transforms?

Sounds too simple, right?

Now, have you ever experienced an earthquake? 

Sounds strange, I know! 

We’re supposed to be talking about changing our thoughts and overcoming depression but instead, I’m here talking to you about earthquakes? 

So, what’s the connection? 

Could understanding earthquakes give us the keys to transform our lives and our depression?

Well, keep listening because you’re going to discover very quickly that the answer to that question is a big fat YES!

Here’s why….

First, let us just think about an earthquake. The devastation which spreads across the landscape is not just due to the point of impact but it’s due to the unseen seismic waves which travels outwards beneath the surface from the epicentre.

Earthquakes are basically a grander, more devastating version of us throwing a pebble into a peaceful lake. 

When the pebble hits the water, concentric circles or waves are created which move outwards and spread across the once peaceful body of water.  

But, what in the world has all this got to do with you transforming your depression or your life?

Well, just like an earthquake isn’t confined to it’s epicentre, our thoughts and mental activity are also not confined to our heads, which is their epicentre. 

You see, we have a thought. Then, our thought-currents spread outwards, across the landscape just like the unseen seismic waves of an earthquake.

Now, I know this may seem like a bit of a wacky comparison, but let me ask you….

Have you ever thought of someone and then they messaged or call you right away? 

  • Or, maybe you called them and they said; “Wow! That’s random, I was just thinking about you!”
  • Or, have you ever had that feeling that you’re being watched from behind and when you turn around, someone quickly shifts their gaze? 
  • Or, maybe you’ve been on the other end of this! You’re the one whose been doing the starring and before long the other person turns around and catches you out?

Have you ever had any of those experiences? 

I know, I sure have!

Well, all of these experiences show us that our thoughts, minds and intentions reach out much further than our heads. 

In other words, all of our mental activities and thoughts are NOT strictly confined to our head.

They have a much greater influence or expand further than we’re aware of.  They have a ripple effect, just like the pebble when it’s thrown into the lake.

In fact, until very recently, it was believed that our thoughts had no physical existence, no real substance to them. They couldn’t affect matter or the physical world around us. 

But, that’s all changing!

Because, evidence suggests that every sound we utter, every word we use, every thought we think, every intention we have, generates a specific vibrational current, which in turn causes the vibrations and matter around us to change accordingly.

In fact, there was an experiment many years ago, involving jars of rice which clearly demonstrated the power our thoughts and words over physical matter.

In this experiment, Dr Emoto placed equal amounts of rice and water in three jars.

Each day he approached these 3 jars as if they were 3 different people.  

  • To the first, he would say; “Thank you” to convey an intention or feeling of love, appreciation and gratitude.  
  • To the second jar, he said, “You idiot!” to convey hatred and disrespect.
  • And, to the third he would utter no words at all, instead he gave it the ‘cold shoulder’ and completely ignored it.

Now, I’m sure we’ve all personally experienced these three different scenarios ourselves. So, if these jars had feelings we know exactly how they’d be feeling, right?

But, what did the results show?

Well, after 30 days the results were pretty astonishing!

  • The first jar of rice which was thanked every day was fermenting nicely and appeared to be in a healthy state. There was no mould or rotting material. 
  • On the other hand, the second jar of rice which was insulted on a daily basis was not looking so healthy.  In fact, it was looking ugly and it was covered with black mould
  • And the third jar, which was given the ‘cold shoulder’ and completely ignored for 30 days, had turned completely black and was rotten.

Now, just ask yourself…

How many times a day, do you call yourself stupid, an idiot or criticise or belittle yourself? 

How many times have you given yourself the ‘cold shoulder’ or turned your back on yourself? 

How many times have you put yourself down on a regular basis?

Well, this experiment clearly shows that all those self-critical or self-defeating thoughts, not only damage your self-esteem but also have a detrimental effect on the physical health and well-being of your internal body-mind system.

Now, I’m not gonna lie, there are plenty of naysayers out there on the internet who call this rice experiment of Dr Emoto’s complete rubbish.  They say it’s pseudoscience and that it holds no weight in the ‘real world’.

But, let me ask you this…

Do you feel more alive, uplifted and full of vitality after someone thanks and appreciates you?  Or, when someone calls you an idiot, says you’re not good enough and gives you the cold shoulder?

You know the answer to this, as well as I do! 

So, we don’t need a person in a lab coat to tell us this experiment holds true in the real world, because we know from our own personal experiences what the truth is!

We know that our system changes in different ways and we feel different when exposed to negative or positive situations, thoughts and feedback.

You know this, I know this.  We’ve all know this. 

Which is actually great news, because it means you already have the power within your hands right now to transform your health, wealth and happiness. And, ultimately, your entire life. 

How is that possible? 

Well, to paraphrase Mahatma Gandhi, the answer lies in becoming the change you wish to see in this world. 

That’s right!  You have the power inside of you right now to not only transform yourself, but to transform this entire world in a positive way.

And, you can start right now, here today!

All it takes is for you to start seeing yourself as your very own personal epicentre – a power centre – and start being more mindful of every thought you think, every word you utter and every intention you hold and simply ask yourself…

  • Is this thought, word or intention uplifting my life, my health, my happiness and my overall wellbeing?
  • Is it uplifting to those around me?
  • Does it help uplift the world, as a whole?

Remember, each and every thought of ours is a real thing and just like an earthquake, our thoughts don’t only effect us at the epicentre of them, they expand outwards via thought currents and they have a very real and direct impact on the landscape around us. 

Every thought of ours is quite literally building something for our future.  

So, why not take the power back into your hands and make sure you’re creating a beautiful one because you do have the power to positively transform and uplift this world, that’s why you matter!
